Asbury Park, NJ - What could be better than spending a sunny Saturday afternoon with friends tossing around a softball? Raising money for charity while doing so!
In the spring of 2007, local singer/songwriter Rick Barry decided to make that concept a reality. Calling upon the talents of various local artists and friends, Barry’s simple idea came to life as The Asbury Rock Stars Charity Softball Tournament. Immediately after the success of the first, plans began to take shape for the second annual event and it only got bigger and better!
This year’s festivities will prove to be no different! In fact, Barry, along with his board of directors, team of volunteers and many talented friends plan on making the third annual Asbury Rock Star Charity Softball Tournament the most lucrative to date. Scheduled for August 8, 2009, with first pitch at 10 a.m., this year’s games will include tournament regulars Status Green, Glen Burtnik, The Milwaukees, Outside the Box, The Back Beat and Joe Harvard among the 80 plus returning players. Spectators can also expect to see some new talent on the roster this year, including Val Emmich, The Sunday Blues, Dub Proof, Mike Noordzy, Michael Brett, Jo Wymer and The Churchills, just to name a few.
The after party will be held at The Wonder Bar on Ocean Ave in Asbury Park, starting at 7 p.m.
The charities benefiting from this year’s tournament will be Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Monmouth County, Brookdale Public Radio 90.5 The Night, The Fealgood Foundation, The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean County, Habitat for Humanity, The Monmouth County Arts Council, Monmouth County SPCA, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Stand Up To Cancer.
