Atlantic Highlands - Mayor Fred Rast officiated at the formal ribbon cutting ceremony last Sunday to open Kunya Siam, a Thai Restaurant at 99 First Avenue. Owners Kunya and Siriporn Sugplung presented the Mayor with a commemorative token on the event, and hosted a buffet dinner for the dozens of friends and relatives who attended.
Councilman Lou Fligor and Roy Dellosso joined in congratulating Kunya and her husband for the opening, which Kunya said she took on because "I want everyone to try Thai food. It's good for you, healthy, attractive, and everyone should enjoy it."
It's also inexpensive. On a dinner menu featuring Thai specialties include Duck sautéed in a spicy basil sauce and Siam Duck, roasted with curry sauce, pineapple, lime leaves herbs and vegetables, the most expensive dish on the menu is $17.95. Many of the dishes contain herbs native to Thailand, as well as garlic and lime, both used heavily in Thai kitchens. Dishes are prepared either mild, medium, or hot, and are fried, sautéed, roasted, steamed, or grilled. Most dishes are $10.95 to $11.95 and are served with Thai Hom Mali rice. Desserts include both fried bananas and friend ice cream.
Many family members were present for the ribbon cutting, and the buffet was followed by a presentation of a traditional Thai dance by a native in her native dress.
The restaurant is open Sundays through Thursdays from 11:30 am to 10 pm for lunch and dinner. Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. All items on the menu can be ordered for takeout. To make reservations or place a take-out order call 732-291-2397.
