Lincroft, NJ - Brookdale Community College invites the community to join in celebrating a variety of International Center sponsored events during April. Autumn Gem (Film). Autumn Gem explores the extraordinary life of the Chinese revolutionary heroine and women's rights activist Qiu Jin (1875-1907). During the reign of the last dynasty in China, Qiu Jim boldly challenged traditional gender roles and demanded equal rights and opportunities for women. At a time when women's lives were often marked by repressive practices such as, foot binding, arranged marriages, and denial of education, she envisioned a future where women would free themselves from the confines of tradition and emerge as active citizens of a new and modern nation. Thursday, April 8, 11:30-1:30 pm at the Student Life Center, Navesink I & II (International Festival.) Celebrate from around the world with dance, food and music. This event brings ethnic groups together to share traditions and celebrate our unique differences. Attendees will also have the opportunity to cast the first votes on posters submitted for the International Education Center 2010 Poster Contest. Brookdale Global Teach-in. Share the world with Brookdale professors by visiting classes in a variety of disciplines dealing with global issues. A list of participating faculty and classes will be posted and publicized, and anyone in the college and community is welcome to attend as many as they choose. Check the International Education Center website for a detailed list of classes that will be open to the public.
Thursday, April 15, 2010, 11:30am in the Student Life Center, Paramount Lounge and 7:00 p.m. in MAN 103 Foreign Film Thursday: "Character" (Holland). After being arrested for the murder of Dreverhaven, the important and feared town bailiff, the young lawyer Katadreuffe remembers the events leading up to the crime through flashbacks which reveal the victim to be his father. Set in 1920's Rotterdam, the story follows Dreverhaven as he exercised his tyrannical power by forcing people from their homes while Katadreuffe grew up by taking refuge in books, cultivating a desire to make something of him self. Post film discussion moderated by Assistant Professor Alex Idavoy. Free and open to the public. Sponsored by Student Life and Activities and the International Education Center.
Wednesday, April 14, 2010, Student Life Center, Silent Auction Preview at 6:45pm & Presentation at 7:30pm – Defying Genocide: Rescue in Rwanda. When the genocide erupted in April 1994, the United Nations pulled out most of its troops, and then United States and European governments evacuated thousands of expatriates. Carl Wilkens, a young humanitarian aid worker, was the only American to stay in the country. Venturing out each day into the streets crackling with mortars and gunfire, he brought food, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city. In addition to Carl Wilken's presentation there will be an important Silent Basket Auction fund-raiser to support programs the Holocaust, Genocide, & Humans Rights Education offers to schools and the community. HGHREC Members and BBC Students free. $10.00 admission non-members/students.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010, 7 - 9 pm at the Student Life Center, Navesink I (Evening of International Poetry Performance.) The 15th Annual Evening of International Poetry Performances is a poetry and psychology festival. Students, faculty, and members of the community perform poetry in the original language from around the world, and explore the relationship between psychology and poetry! Light refreshments will be served. If you or your parents have a poem they love, that reflects courage, wisdom, or temperance, (psychological strengths) send it in the original language and also in English to Dr. Olaoye at eolaoye@brookdalecc.edu by February 27, 2010.
