Monmouth County, NJ - A summer of fun awaits Middletown families at Applebrook, Belford, Chanceville, Thompson, Tindall, and Wilmort parks, thanks to the recent installation of new playground equipment.

Installation of the durable, plastic equipment is part of an ongoing improvement program that began in the 1990s to upgrade obsolete wooden equipment. About half of the township's 50 active parks have playgrounds. While none of the wooden versions remain, existing equipment continues to be upgraded on a rotating basis to ensure compliance with current safety standards. Some of the latest play areas include brightly-colored slides, swings, monkey bars, tunnels and rock-walls.

"Neighborhood parks have been favorite gathering places for generations of families and childhood friends," said Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger. "Maintaining our playgrounds will help to ensure this tradition continues for generations to come."

Applebrook Park is located on Iler Drive; Belford Park is located on Main Street; Chanceville Park is located on Aberdeen Terrace; Tindall Park is located on Tindall Road; Thomspon Park is located on Newman Springs Road and Wilmort is located on Washington Avenue.

"Projects and programs that encourage active living and healthier lifestyles are important to the well-being of our children," said Committeeman Steve Massell who has four young children. "Middletown's playgrounds offer fun, safe opportunities for our children to develop active lifestyles that will benefit them throughout their life."
