Middletown (Monmouth County, NJ) - The Middletown Township Committee wants to hear from residents about the defeated 2010-2011 school district budget. Residents are encouraged provide comments, suggestions and ideas about the school's 2010/2011 proposed budget at middletownnj.org.

All comments received will be forwarded directly to the five Township Committee members.  In accordance with state law, the municipality's governing body must review and recommend cuts to the school budget rejected by the voters on April 20 in order to set the tax rate for 2010/2011.

The Township Committee must recommend any additional cuts to the proposed school budget by May 19th, according to state law. Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger has already proposed a one-year salary freeze as an alternative to additional personnel and program cuts to the district's defeated budget proposal.

In Monmouth County alone, more than 70% of school district budgets including Middletown's, were rejected by voters on April 20. The Middletown school district's proposed budget failed with 7,336 votes against versus 5,402 supporting votes.
