LONG BRANCH - Owner Dennis Tafuri has taken over the former Joe & Maggie's Bistro on Broadway for the past three years, changing the image and establishing a fine reputation for his outstanding gourmet cuisine and extensive wine selection. The upscale renovations created a new ambiance, as he did a complete overhaul. During the three years he has acquired a clientele of educated diners who know and love the epicurean specialties which the restaurant is known for.
Dennis is a member of the American Sommelier Association and hand picks every wine offered at Cask 591. He has been living in the Long Branch area for the past 9 years and is involved in several local organizations. Dennis named the restaurant by combining his passion for wine, a cask is a vessel used to age wine and spirits, and the address of the establishment, 591 Broadway.
Many of you may have known him from the Metropolitan Café in Freehold prior to his purchasing Cash 591. Since opening three yeas ago the restaurant has been very successful and is ideal for the special occasion or business venture, as they have a banquet area on the upper level that can cater up to 90 people.
Upon opening in 2004, the renovations included a completely upgraded bar and lounge area. Adding interest to the dining area is an entire brick wall centered with an elongated black board featuring upscale special wine selections by the glass.
Heading the kitchen is Aaron Bernstein, a graduate of the North East Culinary Institute. He is very innovative and creative and his favorite dishes include Duck Crepes, Wild Mushroom Ravioli, and Forever Braised Short Ribs. His creative menu offers something for every individual taste.
The appetizer selections at Cask are unique and all beautifully presented as well as filled with an abundance of flavor. Dennis suggested that we try the Duck & Wild Mushroom Crepes (duck confit rolled with goat cheese & wild mushrooms, finished with a dried fruit-port reduction). This was absolutely delicious! Compliments to the chef for his creative appetizer!
Another outstanding beginning with the Tuna Roll. The beautiful red tuna was wrapped in crisp phyllo accented with wasabi mousse giving it a spicy flavor.
My entrée which was an evening special was Pork Osso Bucco, an artistic presentation of succulent pork enriched with a flavorful natural reduction sauce. The meat was so tender that it fell off the bone and was enhanced with lentils and Brussel sprouts.
My companion absolutely loved his selection of Long Island Buck (Crescent Farms duck breast with crispy confit leg). This too was an excellent choice served with potato hash and pomegranate glaze. A special treat!
For those of you who would like to sample gourmet items from the Tasting Menu, they offer a three, four or five course menu choice which can also be paired with the appropriate wines. They require the entire table's participation.
Other tried and true menu entrée choices include: Grilled Scottish Salmon, Maryland Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, 'Casked' Hanger Steak, Vegetarian Steak and Stuffed Chicken Breast.
Always check their website, www.cask591.com for upcoming events, including live jazz and wine dinners.
