HIGHLANDS – When we think of Bahr’s we automatically think of their fresh, flavorful seafood which they are known for throughout Monmouth County and beyond.
Their new executive chef Butch Greenwald is also very familiar with German cuisine as he was chef at the now defunct Hofbrauhaus for more than 20 years. Cooking is his passion as he began as a dishwasher at the Hofbrauhaus when he was only 15 years old, working his way up to executive chef.
He came to Bahr’s in 2007 as su chef and within months took the position as executive chef taking pride in every dish that he creates.
Greenwald says that the response for the Oktoberfest has already been very successful and “People keep coming as we are one of the only German restaurants in Monmouth County.” He also stated that we are trying to keep something on the menu through the winter months even after Oktoberfest.
Bahr’s Landing has been serving generations of seafood lovers who know and love fresh seafood, a lot of it purchased locally or caught from their own boats. You can’t get much fresher than that! The famed restaurant has been kept in the family since 1917 and is now owned by Ray Cosgrove and his son Jay.
Bahr’s has four dining rooms on the main floor, and a downstairs room for private functions, each one offering a sensational view. You may still be able to enjoy their outdoor deck and Tiki Bar, weather permitting.
As mentioned, the main attraction this fall is the Oktoberfest. We thoroughly enjoyed our festive meal beginning with the home-style Pea Soup with croutons. This was extraordinary, a creamy soup abundant with chunks of ham and vegetables. Two traditional appetizers were the Potato Pancakes (with sour cream and applesauce) and Assorted Grilled Wurst, half knock/half brat, served on a bed of sauerkraut. The two selections were outstanding, perfectly made and very enjoyable!
Bahr’s offers six entrée specials, each one appealing and typically German. The Bavarian Pork Chops were succulent, sitting on a bed of sauerkraut and served with an appetizing potato dumpling and German red cabbage. This is truly a winner!
A favorite of mine is Weiner Schnitzel and here at Bahr’s Chef Greenwald really made a statement with the preparation. The breaded pan-seared veal cutlets were tender and tasty, served with spaetzle and a home-style gravy. Outstanding!
Other choices include Fried Pierogies; Old Hofbrauhaus Special (knockwurst and brat-wurst with smoked pork chop served over sauerkraut with red cabbage and potato pancake); Traditional Sauerbraten, and German Pot Roast. Top off your Oktoberfest with their luscious German Chocolate Cake or Black Forest Cheese Cake!
A special treat at Bahr’s is the new Lobtoberfest featuring dinners such as Surfer & Turfer (1 lb. lobster & BBQ Baby Ribs); Lobster Nantucket; Lobster Pot Pie; Lobster Cakes; Twin 1 lb. Steamed Jersey Lobsters or Lobster Ravioli.
