Skateboarders give and receive

Local skateboarders should save the date for the first annual “Sweep and S.k.a.t.e.” being held Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Atlantic Highlands Skate Park.

The event is being run by Atlantic Skate and Surf, a shop in Atlantic Highlands, and Instinct Skateboards, a New Jersey based skateboard company.

“Mike Nesci, the owner of Instinct Skateboards, and I wanted to set up something fun for the kids while at the same time stressing environmental awareness and giving back to the community,” said John Denvir, the owner of Atlantic Skate and Surf.

Participants in the sidewalk sweep should meet at the skate park at 10 a.m. Bags and gloves will be provided for them, Denvir said. He added that volunteers would also be available to lead the groups on the sweep.

The “skate” contest will begin around 11:30, but “everyone who wants to be in the contest should take part in the clean-up,” Denvir said.

Denvir explained that the game skate is similar to the basketball game, horse. Each time a contestant fails to complete a skateboarding trick, he or she will be assigned a letter from the word skate, he said.

In order to participate, a registration form and waiver should be submitted. Both forms can be picked up at Atlantic Skate and Surf, 80 First Ave.

Denvir expects the event to be a “gromfest,” which means contestants will mainly consist of children under 18. “That is the core of our clientele,” he said.

Those contestants must also have their parents sign the waiver. “We cannot let them participate otherwise,” Denvir said.

Wearing a helmet is also mandatory, he added.

According to Denvir, the contest will be divided into groups based on age. “We want to keep it fair and keep it close to age and skill level,” he said.

He added that there would be at least four or five judges present.

Prizes will include skateboard decks, wheels and $150 passes to an indoor skate park. “The kids will love that one,” Denvir said.

The rain date for the event is Nov. 29 at 10 a.m.
“It should be a really fun day,” Denvir concluded.
