The Keansburg Titans varsity football team is heading into its last game on Thanksgiving after a second, hard-fought win of the season.
The Titans garnered their first win against Red Bank Regional earlier this month and grabbed another from the Bordentown Scotties, 1-8, with a 41-13 victory on Nov. 15.
“It is always nice to win, but I am particularly happy for my seniors. They have worked hard all year and are now seeing some reward for their efforts,” said Head Coach Brian Kmak.
During the first quarter, tight end Mike Sheehan scored on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Frank Soleo. Derrick Riley’s subsequent one-point kick was successful, bringing the score to 7-0.
Later, Soleo edged another touchdown with a two-yard run, and with Riley’s kick, the Titans were able bump the score to 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.
Bordentown lessened the gap during the second quarter when tight end Sean Eleuteri caught a 2-yard pass from wide receiver Pete Pulhac.
However, Keansburg running back Dan Gogan grasped another touchdown with an 18-yard run, bringing in another six points for Keansburg, pushing the score to 20-7.
Kmak admitted that, by the end of the first half, he was feeling nervous that Keansburg’s lead might slip away.
“We lost focus at the end of the first half and I felt we were letting Bordentown gain momentum for the second half,” Kmak said. “I challenged [my team] at halftime to raise their level of concern and re-focus their efforts to finishing the game.”
Things continued to hold strong for Keansburg during the third quarter, as Soleo edged the one-yard run to secure another touchdown, which was followed by Riley’s successful kick that earned the Titans another point.
With 27-7 on the board, Scotties running back Thomas Lee ran 63 yards to pick up the second touchdown for Bordentown. The one-point kick failed, leaving the score at 27-13.
Keansburg wide receiver Pat Osterbye completed a five-yard run for the Titan’s fifth touchdown, and with a successful kick, Keansburg ended the third quarter with a 34-13 score.
The final points of the competition were achieved by Soleo again inching over the line during the fourth quarter to solidify Keansburg’s 41-13 win.
Kmak said the team’s final game would be at home on Thanksgiving against its traditional opponent, Mater Dei High School, at 10:30 a.m.
