Legislation sponsored by Sen. Sean Kean, R-District 11, that would permanently designate February as “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” in New Jersey passed the full Senate unanimously.
“Raising public awareness of the warning signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer will save lives across the state,” Kean said. “In many cases, by the time a diagnosis of ovarian cancer is made, the treatment options become limited and the patient has fewer viable medical choices.”
The bill will promote awareness among the general public and the health care community of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, the importance of early detection, and the risk factors associated with developing ovarian cancer, according to officials.
The bill directs the governor to annually issue a proclamation and call on public officials, private organizations, the health care community and all citizens to observe Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month with appropriate events and activities.
“Regular screening in order to catch ovarian cancer at an early stage will increase the ability of doctors to successfully treat this silent killer. I hope the bill is acted on in the Assembly at the earliest possible date, and that it is signed into law before the end of the month,” Kean concluded.
